Board of Directors

There is no single available source that provides a complete listing of the people who served as members of Wayside’s Board of Directors.  The following listing attempts to create such a directory.  The names in this list come from available Playbills, news papers, and other sources.  While it is not complete listing, it is a compilation of names assembled from available sources.

The summer season booklet for 1963 does not have a page that lists Board members, as it appears that a Board had not been formed for this first season.  It is assumed that during the Theatre’s early years, Leo Bernstein was the controlling force for the management of the Theatre.

The 1964 copy of the Wayside Theatre Summer Booklet does not list any Board members, but it does list the following names under the heading, Staff for Wayside Theatre:
            Producer - - Leo M. Bernstein
Managing Director - - Owen Phillips
Stage Manager - - Phillip Huffman
Press Representative - - Betty Harris
Production Assistant - - John Adden
Master of Properties - - Ellen Barrett
Property Assistant - - Gloria Wilcox
            Treasurer - - Romeo Stickley
Executive Secretary - - Evelyn Wilcox
Theatre Parties - - Evelyn Grim
            Photographer - - Leonard A. Durnier
(from Wayside Theatre Summer Booklet, 1964).

In 1965, Bernstein turned the Theatre over to the newly created Wayside Foundation for the Arts, a 503-c-3, not-for-profit corporation.  At the head of this list is the name of Herbert W. White listed as the Executive Director of the Wayside Inn 1797, Inc.  While there is no listing for a Board of Directors, the 1965 Summer Season Staff is as follows:
            Producer – Leo Bernstein
            Managing Director – Owen Phillips
            Stage Manager – Jim Way
            Production Assistant – Lynn Sams
            Musical Director – Byron Grant
            Costume Designer – Maida Murry
            Executive Secretary – Esther Kline
Publicity Director – Anne Marie Borger
            Actor’s Lodge – Hope Way
            House Manager – Bob Jones

The Playbills for 1966 and 1967 do not list the names of the Board of Directors.  In 1968, there is an indication of the creation of an Advisory Board of the Wayside Foundation for the Arts.  The purpose of this organization, along with the names of the Board members, is listed as:

The Wayside Theater … aims to present exciting, provocative, as well as popular theater fare … to present plays of quality produced with imagination and performed by talented professionals for rapidly developing intelligent and discerning audiences.

To have top professional directors, designers and administrative personnel producing the plays of the world’s great dramatists.

Fellowship Grants to young actors, directors and designers for the Winter Workshop and Summer apprentice groups.

When funds permit, to have distinguished guest actors and directors from the theater world.

To run a contest to encourage new young playwrights to send in their plays with the idea of possible production if their play should be chosen by a committee made up of the theater director and other capable judges.

To operate a school which would eventually train actors of all ages, and in all phases of theater productions, many of whom would be utilized by our own resident company.

To establish a touring group to present plays by Shakespeare and other classical writers … in the high schools and colleges throughout the surrounding areas as part of a cultural and educational program.

The Wayside Theater and the Wayside Gallery are this area’s non-profit, cultural and educational organization and not a money-making commercial project for the financial gain of any individual.

Plan for the improvement of the Wayside Gallery and for the Institution of a School of Static Arts.  Plans for the future will include schools in dance and music.

Members of the Advisory Board are:  State Senator J. Kenneth Robinson, Tyree Dillard, Mrs. William Clagott, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Gilpin, Jr., Ted Graves of Luray, Rep. John O. Marsh, Jr., Mrs. Victor Albright, Craig Livingston, Owen Phillips, and Mrs. P. T. Grove (NVD. 5 Oct. 1966).

This group’s forward-thinking and their devotion to expanding the cultural life in the Shenandoah Valley is certainly worthy of note.  The Theatre created a tour group the following year to perform works of Shakespeare, but these performances did not take place in local educational institutions, rather in other locations.  One wonders if the above recommendations made by the group were only for the year 1966, or if they were a part of the agenda for the Board of Directors to adopt in the following years.

Information about a Board continues to be vague until 1969, when a list of names is found in copy of the minutes of a meeting held on December 4, 1969.  It isn’t clear if the names listed were for the Wayside Foundation of the Arts or for the Board of Directors for Wayside Theatre.  The following lists those who were in attendance:

Leo M. Bernstein, Mrs. George Conrad, Dr. & Mrs. John Cadden, Mrs. Joseph A. Massie, Lacy Rice, Jr., Stuart Bernstein, Richard Bernstein, Charles Jones, Mrs. John Lewis, Gerald Slavet.

Those unable to attend were: Honorable J. Kenneth Robinson, George Aldhizer, Craig Livingston, Jack Davis, Dr. William McCoy, and Frank Armstrong.

There is no 1970 Playbill in the Archives that would provide the names of the Board members.  One source indicates the name of Charles G. Jones as the President of the Board, but no additional names are given.

On page eight of the 1971 Playbill, there is a list of the names of Directors, Patrons, the Wayside Women’s Committee and the like.  This list contains the names of the Board as well as the location where each each member lived:

George Aldhizer, II, Broadway; Frank Armstrong, III, Winchester; Leo M. Bernstein, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. John Cadden, Strasburg; Mrs. George Conrad, Harrisonburg; Charles G. Jones, Winchester; Mrs. John P. Lewis, Winchester; Craig Livingston, Front Royal; Mrs. Joseph Massie, Winchester; Dr. William McCoy Berryville; Lacy Rice, Jr., Martinsburg, W.Va.; J. Kenneth Robinson, Winchester; Gerald Slavet, Middletown.

An un-titled newspaper article states that Frank Armstrong, III was unanimously elected as the new president of the Board of Directors.  He replaces Charles G. Jones who moved to Leesburg, but will remain active on the board.  (PN&C.  23 Sept. 1971).

The inside cover of a 1971 playbill, lists the following names as being on the Board of Directors:

An article in the Winchester Evening Star reports on the election of the Wayside Board for 1975 and lists the following names:  Frank Armstrong, III, out-going president, has announced the new executive slate for Wayside Foundation for The Arts Board of Directors.  The new president of the board is Marjorie Lewis, a seven-year member of the board.  Harold Herman, long associated with Wayside in one capacity or another, has been elected vice-president, and Ben Dutton, only recently elected to the board, is the new Secretary-Treasurer.

A brief bio follows the name of each of the new officers, but there is no additional information given for the other members of the board (TWS, 17 Nov. 1975).

It is not known when the category of Honorary Members was created, or for how long it was used.  In looking through the names for this category, it seems those included as Honorary Members were former Board members, but there may have been other criteria for giving this title.

A memo describes a project for the 1988 Board outlines that The Development Committee of the Wayside Theatre Board of Directors proposes that a Corporate Fundraising project be undertaken that will require vigorous participation from the board members to raise $25,000 for the Theatre.  It was proposed that each member visit the head of an organization with the goal of obtaining a commitment of $1000 from each in order to enlist more support for Wayside from the business community.  No information is available that tells if this project was successful.

It should be noted that Windle relinquished his position as Treasurer and resigned from the Board soon after being elected due to the lack of a clear financial plan for the Theatre.  He wrote a very strong letter pointing out there was no clear, sound financial plan and that he could not continue in this capacity.

The year 2012 was a period of huge transition for the Theatre. At some point during the year, John Westervelt retires as president and Byron Brill assumes this position.  There is no complete list available, but the following list is taken from a 2012 playbill, page 34.
